Runes Support Ending on April 16, 2026

Leather is ending support for the Runes protocol on April 16, 2026. Transfer Runes to a compatible wallet via Luminex or by importing your secret key to retain access.

Apr 8, 2026

Leather will discontinue support for the Runes protocol on April 16 2026. After this date, Runes balances will no longer be accessible or manageable within Leather.

Although your L1 asset will remain in the wallet you risk burning them accidentally if you leave them in Leather and use the wallet for other bitcoin transactions. To keep your Runes safe, you are strongly advised to transfer your Runes to a compatible wallet before April 16 2026.

Required Action

Transfer your Runes out of Leather using one of the following methods:

  • Luminex: Create and broadcast transfers directly via the Luminex platform.
  • Runes-compatible wallet: Import your Leather account using your secret key into a wallet that supports Runes, then initiate transfers from there.

Failure to transfer before the deadline risks loss of tokens.

How to Transfer Your Runes

Option 1: Use Luminex

Luminex provides full support for Runes transfers.

  1. Connect your Leather wallet to Luminex.
  2. Select the Runes you want to transfer.
  3. Enter the destination address (a Runes-compatible wallet).
  4. Confirm and broadcast the transaction.

Option 2: Use a Runes-Compatible Wallet

  1. Export your Leather secret key.
  2. Import the key into a wallet that supports Runes.
  3. Locate your Runes balances.
  4. Send your tokens to a secure destination wallet.

Important Notes

  • Ensure the destination wallet supports Runes. Sending to an incompatible address can result in permanent loss.
  • Network fees apply to all transfers.
  • You are advised to complete all transfers before April 16 to avoid risk of accidental spending but it will still be possible after that date too as long as you use those external tools (Luminex or another wallet).

Background

Leather previously supported the Runes protocol, including balance display and integrations with platforms such as Luminex. As outlined in recent communication from the @LeatherBTC X-channel, this change reflects a deliberate shift in focus toward the Stacks ecosystem and advancing Bitcoin Layer 2 functionality.

Runes remain a Bitcoin-based fungible token protocol using the UTXO model. Continued interaction with Runes requires external tools and compatible wallets after the cutoff date.
