Why your Ledger account might not show up in Leather

How Leather discovers Ledger accounts

Ledger Wallet and the Stacks protocol derive accounts differently. By default, Leather uses the Stacks protocol standard, which discovers only the first Ledger account.

Accounts created directly in the Ledger Wallet use a different derivation path. To access them, you can choose Ledger Wallet compatibility when connecting your Ledger device during onboarding.

Choosing a derivation path

When connecting your Ledger, you’ll be asked to select a preferred address standard:

  • Stacks derivation paths (default)
Discovers the first Ledger account. Recommended for most users.

  • Ledger Wallet compatibility
Discovers additional accounts created in the Ledger Wallet.

What happens when you switch

Switching derivation paths changes how accounts are discovered:

  • You’ll be signed out of connected apps and need to authenticate again

  • The addresses shown in Leather will change

  • Your funds and keys remain safe on your Ledger. No funds are moved or lost.

Summary

  • Leather uses the Stacks protocol standard by default

  • Ledger Wallet compatibility helps discover additional accounts

  • Switching may sign you out and change displayed addresses

  • Your funds always remain safe
